Jose Mourinho has confirmed Ander Herrera suffered a ‘bad injury’ during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Sevilla on Wednesday night.
Herrera was picked to start in a midfield three alongside Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay during the first leg of United’s Champions League last-16 clash last in Spain.
However, the 28-year-old’s night didn’t last long as Herrera went down clutching his leg in the 17th minute after attempting a routine back-heel in the Sevilla penalty area.
The midfielder was eventually forced off after receiving treatment from the United medical staff and was replaced by Paul Pogba – who had been dropped for the game last night.
It was Herrera’s first appearance in over three weeks since the Spaniard picked up a hamstring injury during the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last month.
Herrera appears to have aggravated the problem last night and Mourinho has suggested it looks a ‘bad injury’ while the United boss also pointed the finger at his medical team for declaring the midfielder 100% fit.
“I think it is a bad injury. He had a small injury that stopped him from playing the last couple of matches, but the medical department said he was 100 per cent ready for last Saturday [against Huddersfield
We didn’t play him to give him more work and more protection, but it looks like he was not fully fit. And then the back-heel creates a contraction in the muscular area where he had the previous problem and now we have proof he was not 100 per cent fit.”
Herrera will no doubt be further assessed by the United medical department to see how long he’ll be on the sidelines for but he’s almost certainly out of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
The injury to Herrera will open the door for Pogba to be handed a recall this weekend and the French international should be eager to impress against the Blues amid rumours of a bust-up with Mourinho.
